OLS - 6

Citywide Inclusive Sanitation is a public service approach to planning and implementing safely managed urban sanitation systems to develop solutions that provide sustainable service delivery for all urban residents to meet Sustainable Development Goal Six (SDG6). In this ROCKBlue Online Lecture Series (OLS) segment, our panel of experts discusses various aspects of the issues pertinent to water and sanitation utilities in developing countries.

Chris Serjak | General Manager – ROCKBlue

Chris Serjak has 20 years of experience in water and sanitation, infrastructure project management, sustainable international development and environmental consulting. Chris currently serves as South Africa Team Leader for the USAID Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) Finance project seeking to unlock funding for investment in the WASH sector to meet global targets for universal access to clean water and adequate sanitation. He previously led the $500M water and wastewater sector of USAID’s Iraq Infrastructure Reconstruction Program – the agency’s largest ever infrastructure project. Chris has also managed major infrastructure and environmental projects in Afghanistan, Timor-Leste, and the United States. He began his career in South Africa where he worked on environmental assessments of mining projects in the Royal Bafokeng Nation in northern South Africa, the Maguga Dam in Swaziland, and various commercial projects throughout South Africa and Botswana. Chris has a MSc in Sustainable Development from the University of London School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), a postgraduate diploma in Construction Management from the University of Washington, and a BS in Geological and Environmental Science from Stanford University.

Martin Gambrill
Lead Water and Sanitation Specialist – The World Bank

Martin is a Lead Water and Sanitation Specialist in the World Bank’s Water Global Practice, charged with leading the Global Practice’s urban and rural sanitation agenda. Prior to this Martin has worked at the Bank for two decades on the preparation and implementation of water, sanitation and urban development investment projects in Africa, Latin America, Asia and Eastern Europe. Martin graduated from the University of Leeds in the UK with a B.Sc. in Civil Engineering and went on to obtain his PhD at Leeds on the treatment of tropical wastewater for safe effluent reuse in irrigation. He has over twenty-five years of experience with multi-lateral development agencies, non-governmental organizations, engineering consultants and in academic research.

David Auerbach
Co-founder – Sanergy

David Auerbach is a co-founder of Sanergy, a pioneering social enterprise in Nairobi, Kenya which builds healthy, prosperous communities in Africa’s informal settlements by making hygienic sanitation affordable and accessible. Sanergy’s systems-based approach empowers the local community to own and operate sanitation facilities, while Sanergy provides business and operational support to ensure its operators thrive. Sanergy collects and recycles the waste into animal feed and organic fertilizer, which is sold to Kenyan farmers to address the region’s food security challenges. Previously, David ran Partnerships at Endeavor, a non-profit that helps high-impact entrepreneurs in the developing world. He served as the Deputy Chair for Poverty Alleviation at the Clinton Global Initiative in 2005-6. David taught in central China for two years as a Yale-China Teaching Fellow. David began his career at the Center for American Progress. David is an Ashoka, Echoing Green and Rainer Arnhold Fellow. He holds an MBA from MIT and a BA from Yale University. He lives in Nairobi, Kenya.
